The Reel of Tulloch

“The Reel of Tulloch”, or “Ruidhle Thullachain” to give it its Gaelic title, is a very old tune and was regarded throughout the Highlands of Scotland as righ nan port, the king of the tunes: see Keith Norman MacDonald, The Gesto Collection of Highland Music, (Skye, 1895), 152. It is thought to have been composed by John Gearr Macgregor around 1640: see James Scott Skinner, Harp and Claymore Collection,(London and Glasgow, 1904).

“The Reel of Tulloch” had its own independent history, mainly as a two part reel, but often with many variations added, such as those by James Scott Skinner. When it arrived in Ireland, it received the usual make-over, and can be found in the Grier manuscripts as “The Reels of Tully”.
